UL Lafayette welcomes the Class of 2023 to campus for Freshman Week 2019! We are excited to have you here and are pleased to offer a variety of activities to make your first week on campus fun, educational, and most importantly, welcoming!

The week's activities include First-Year Info Sessions designed to help you succeed. Get your passport* stamped at every session you attend during Freshman Week, then turn it in to your Peer Mentor during Cajun Connection on Thursday, August 22, 2019.

For every session you attend, you will be entered into a drawing for great prizes! Info Sessions are highlighted in yellow below. *Pick up a passport at the first session you attend.

10 AM - 4 PM, HILLIARD MUSEUM OPEN TO FRESHMAN ONLY! - Hilliard University Art Museum, 710 East St. Mary Blvd.
Enjoy the a/c and explore the exhibitions at the Hilliard University Art Museum! UL Students receive free admission year round but only Freshman receive free admission today. Learn more about how you can work and volunteer at the museum during your time at UL as well as how to make the best use of our resources. We'll also have giveaways available throughout the day.
 
FIRST-YEAR INFO SESSION #1
11 - 11:45 AM, “Working in College: When, Where, Why?” - Union, Bayou Bijou
Get all the information you need to know about having part-time jobs and internships while you are in college. This session will tell you where to find these jobs, the best time to have a job, and why these experiences are important for your career readiness after college.
FIRST-YEAR INFO SESSION #2
12 - 12:30 PM, “Take Your Education Further with Study Abroad” - Union, Bayou Bijou
Learn about the amazing opportunities available to you through the UL Lafayette Study Abroad Programs! This session will delve into how you can prepare for studying abroad, both financially and academically, as well as the lasting impact these programs have on you and your career.

12 - 1 PM, OUT-OF-STATE STUDENT MIXER WITH ALUMNI - Alumni Center
Out of state residents will have an opportunity to meet local alumni and learn about their experiences while being a student at UL and how to navigate being in their first year. RAs will be at The Brew from 11:30-12:15 to walk you to the Alumni House.

1 - 1:50 PM, "Campus Cupboard Volunteer Opportunities" - Union, Bayou Bijou
Are you interested in a volunteer opportunity which directly serves our students? Did you know ensuring food security is a challenge for many college students? Our campus has a campus cupboard which is a great resource for UL Lafayette undergraduate and graduate students who need short-term food assistance. The pantry provides free, nonperishable items to meet students’ temporary food needs. In order to serve our students, we NEED outstanding volunteers to work at the Campus Cupboard. Come learn about our cupboard, how we assist students, and learn how YOU can become involved and SERVE others through this project!

Begin college with financial confidence! Get money-saving tips, learn the basics of borrowing and using credit cards, and discover how to protect your credit. Make the most of your money, starting today!
 
FIRST-YEAR INFO SESSION #5
3 - 3:45 PM, “What's Happening the First Two Weeks on Campus" - Union, Bayou Bijou
Find out about the multiple events and activities happening on campus in your first two weeks! This is your chance to find out more about how to get involved on campus and meet the people who can get you connected!
 
3 - 4:00 PM, Black P.R.I.N.T. - Motivational Monday -Union, Evangeline Art Gallery
The event was created to bring awareness to mental health within our black communities through a brief presentation by a few organizations (on & off campus). This presentation will bring to the forefront ways to overcome and live with mental illnesses while juggling your first year of college. Introducing healthy outlets is the ultimate goal and overall stride we are taking to ensure the students feel more at ease when things get hectic throughout the year.

After our presentation, we transition into a fun, interactive, and create vision board activity where students and members of our E-Council will illustrate their goals and aspirations on poster boards. This will promote creativity, interaction amongst upperclassmen and peers, and gives everyone a physical reminder of what they aspired to accomplished in the 2019-2020 academic year.

4 - 4:45 PM, “Major Conversation: How do You Fit in?” - Union, Bayou Bijou
With all the information available about majors and careers, there is no shortage of opinions, advice, stereotypes and myths to come with it. What about your ideas? What about what you bring to the table? What about how you will create the future? What about the facts? Join this session to find out more about how you are a major part of the conversation when it comes to choosing an academic major.
 
5 - 6 PM, TAILGATE WITH YOUNG LIFE COLLEGE  - Boucher Street
Come cool off and have some fun with popsicles and tailgate games!
 
FIRST-YEAR INFO SESSION #7
5 - 6 PM, "UL Academic Mentoring Matters" - Union, Bayou Bijou
Find out how the UL Academic Mentoring Matters Network can help students in the schools of Science and Engineering to "get the grade" and achieve academic success. Learn how working with your peers improves your academic experience, and how resources on campus help build a strong academic peer network. Participate in activities that encourage reflection on effective academic practices for college level science and engineering courses.
6 - 8:30 PM, LET IT GROW (MOVIE NIGHT AND POTTED PLANT PARTY) - Randolph Hall
Come plant seeds and bulbs to place in your rooms. Enjoy food from a local restaurant while watching "The Lorax."
 
9 - 10 PM, FIRST FLOOR MEETINGS IN THE HALLS - see flyers in your building (Mandatory for those who will live on campus)
Meet your RA & learn about how to get involved in your residence halls. Learn about the housing policies and all the programs planned for you.

Did you always struggle with math? Did you always make A's in math class? Come to this session to learn every single math resource UL provides to freshmen so you can say you mastered math your first year!
 
 

11 AM - 12 PM, Dorm Sports Leagues - Is it In You? - Union, River Room

Did you play sports before or are interested in starting and want to continue that competitive spirit? Come learn about Intramural Sports & sign up for your Res Hall Team.

1:30 - 2:30 PM, PUPS & POPSICLES - Dupre Library
Enjoy popsicles while cuddling with therapy animals from Pet Partners of Acadiana.

 

2 - 4 PM, Black P.R.I.N.T. Rec Day - Bourgeois Hall

The purpose of this event is to showcase our awesome fitness center on South campus. We will be promoting healthy mental, physical, and social health through a multitude of physical activities. This will also bring awareness to stress, mental health, and introduce the incoming freshmen to how important it is to stay active to be successful in college.

5 - 6 PM, "The Dos and Don'ts: Faculty Perspective" - Union, Bayou Bijou
Meet instructors on an interactive panel to learn about what they expect, advice they have, and more.
 

5 - 6:30 PM, College of the Arts Meet and Greet, Fletcher Hall
Get to know the Dean, department heads, and faculty of the College of Arts! Refreshments will be served.

5:30 - 7 PM, Black Student Mixer - Louisiane Room (2nd floor of the Union)
Connect with student leaders from the Black Male Leadership Association, Black Women Leadership Association, black faculty/staff, and the Christiana Smith African-American Alumni Chapter by attending the Black Student Mixer! This will provide our students with the opportunity to engage with their peers and other members of our campus community through dialogue and interactive activities. Through networking and socializing, our incoming freshmen students will be able to make connections and gain important insight on being successful students at UL Lafayette.

Hear from university staff and faculty on how to effectively communicate inside and outside the classroom.

Jeremy Bates grew up in a family defined by addiction and dysfunction, but he never let those things define him. Instead, he turned his experiences with substance abuse into a one-of-kind presentation and approach: preventing underage drinking by identifying and understanding the underlying causes of risky behavior.

Live music, Cajun dancing, and dinner... a perfect mid-week combination! Join the Ragin' Cajun Catholics at Our Lady of Wisdom for Freshman Fais Do Do, you won't want to miss this!

Come join us for some frisbee fun & some tasty freeze pops. We will have some discs to play with but if you want to bring your own please do so! & if frisbee isn't your thing, that's okay too! We still want to meet you so come grab a freeze pop and hangout!

8 - 10 PM, Black P.R.I.N.T. NPHC Wild N' Out - The Quad
The purpose of this event is to informally introduce our NPHC organizations here at UL. Each org will have a representative introduce their prospective org, and then they’re org will present themselves by a step presentation. Once this is done, music will ensue, the orgs will stroll, and interact with the student body. They will also answer general questions or concerns regarding their orgs.

This is your start to your UNIV 100 course where you'll meet your instructor, peer mentor, and classmates.

Doors open at 2:00 PM.

Are you restless from being in classes all day? Well, this is the event for you! Come get all of your energy out by slicing up fruit with swords just like the classic mobile game Fruit Ninja! Not only will you be able to get your ninja on, you can also come inside and fight in a sumo suit then sit down and eat some Chick-fil-A with us.

Beat the heat with a sweet treat from IFC! Members from the Interfraternity Council at UL Lafayette will be on hand to answer questions about joining a Fraternity, being a part of the Greek community, and advise on recruitment. Join them for free, cold Snoballs from a local hot spot!

11 AM - 2 PM, Backyard Bash at Rose Garden - green spaces outside Coronna Hall
Come meet your neighbors in the Rose Garden Backyard. Make your personalized street sign, take a picture on the Big Red Chair, play bubble soccer and listen to 80’s music while meeting the class of 2023.

2 PM - 4 PM, Black P.R.I.N.T. Pool Party - Bourgeois Hall
Students will enjoy the final day of Black P.R.I.N.T with a pool party at Bourgeois Hall. There will be photographers, free food, music, dancing, and beach volleyball!

8 - 10 PM University Program Council - Dive-in Movie! - Bourgeois Hall, Rec Sports Aquatics Center
What's a COOL way to view an amazing film? IN A POOL! Join UPC as we host a Dive-in movie! This unique experience combines two favorite summer activities; movie viewing and a nice dip in the lazy river!!

Enjoy a fun night of skating with your friends under the stars in the University Quad near the flashing fleur de-lis with food and music to start your year off. Great news is that the roller rink is coming to you.
