The Big Event

On Saturday, Oct. 25, 2014, United Way of Acadiana and the University of Louisiana at Lafayette will be hosting The BIG Event, a day of community service that allows 3,000 UL Lafayette students, faculty, and staff to give back to their community through volunteerism. The BIG Event invites UL students, faculty, and staff to make one BIG impact in one day. Volunteers will have the opportunity to complete hands-on projects, which may include beautification and landscaping activities, painting, playground refurbishing, cleaning, holiday preparation, project assembly, building projects and projects that allow them to work directly with others on activities that support and improve our community.

We are still looking for project sites. This opportunity is open to UL departments, local schools, nonprofits, churches, community groups, civic groups, and basically any organization in Lafayette, Carencro, Youngsville, Broussard, Breaux Bridge, and Scott, that are willing to provide student volunteers with hands-on projects throughout the community. As mentioned we are looking to engage 3,000 UL Lafayette volunteers and would welcome your participation in this day of service. You identify the projects and provide the supplies and we will provide the manpower!

Teams will average 15 to 25 volunteers. If you need more volunteers, indicate the number needed on the form. Register your project as soon as possible at:

The History

Mr. Joe Nussbaum, then Vice President of the Student Government Association at Texas A&M, began The Big Event in 1982 as a way to say "Thank You" to the surrounding community of Bryan-College Station. Joe Nussbaum envisioned a one-day service project where students of Texas A&M University could show their appreciation of local residents by completing various tasks at their homes. He thought that after years of loyal support from the community, the very least college students could do is give back for one day.

The Mission

The Big Event gives students the opportunity to volunteer in their community in their own way. Through a variety of service projects in partnership with United Way of Acadiana, students gain a sense of citizenship and social responsibility, all while promoting a Ragin Cajun spirit.

What The Big Event has become

The Big Event has seen tremendous growth over the past 27 years. Participation has grown to 12,500 students completing more than 1,200 jobs in the communities of Bryan and College Station. Presently, 72 Big Events occur at universities across the nation. Although The Big Event has become the largest one-day, student-run service project in the nation, our message still remains the same: simply saying "Thank You."

The Big Event has affected many people in the Lafayette community. In order for us to continue this tradition of positive service and citizenship, donations are highly appreciated. You can donate here to help us give a BIG thanks to our Ragin Cajun community.
